For 7th graders on "The Wheel" this is the "Spanish" class. It is more like a Spanish class the last half of the six weeks, but for the first half we explore foreign languages in general.
Taking a few weeks to examine the basic structure of all languages is a good beginning to the study of a specific foreign language.
We will take a look at how languages compare to one another, listen to recordings of native speakers of many different languages, explore the many different kinds of alphabets, and much more. You will create your own alphabet, read words in Russian, and then toward the end we will focus attention on just Spanish.
What are the most spoken languages?
In what parts of the world are they spoken?
Why do some alphabets look so different?
How is a single language like a house?
How are many languages like a community?
We will discuss the answers to these questions and more.
